HD Clone stuck on "Adjusting File System Information"

Post by jfield00 » Sun Feb 13, 2011 5:57 pm

I have the free version of HD clone and I'm attempting to clone my Hard Drive from a 160GB to a 750GB because I need more space.

I let it run over night and now it says 100% copied but it's still running and says "Adjusting File System Information" which it has said for a couple hours now.

The "Elapsed Time" is still running and Remaining has been stuck on 00:01 for all this time.

Will it be ok if I abort the copy? Will it not be bootable if I abort?

Is there anything I will need to do to make it bootable once finished? Thanks.

It's hard to say, but initially, I don't think it will boot ok (if you're using the windows version of HDClone), because the first sector (the one containing the partition table) is only written at the very end, otherwise Windows will recognize the drives during copy, which will lead to all sorts of problems.

Currently, HDClone does
- analyze file system(s)
- copy from sector 1 - end
- adjust file system(s)
- adjust disk ID and correct disk ID in Operating System's registries
- copy sector 0 (with adjusted partition table)

To have it bootable, you'll need the correct sector 0, which might be hard to get. With some disk editor tools, (HxD, WinHex) you can copy the original Sector 0 to the new disk, which will then be bootable, but not have yet the correct partition table.
If your original disk had only one partition, then it's easy, in the partition table simply change the old size indicator (WinHex has a mode for this action) to the new disk's size (750 instead of 160GB, or better said 1,450,000,000 sectors instead of 310,000,000 sectors)

I'm having the same problem.

Attempting to clone a 160 GB Samsung disk (30 GB used) to a 60 GB Corsair SSD from within Windows, the process hangs at 96% with 5 seconds remaining and the status: "Adjusting file system information". It has hung like this for 10 hours.

Should we try a bootdisk? Thanks in advance.

You should first try the newest version 4.0.4a, this has a higher chance of success than changing to the self-booting version.
