HDClone - Over 100000 read errors ?!

Post by Joanne » Mon Jul 26, 2010 8:31 pm

Good evening,

Although my current HD is working fine, it has become noisy after a re-install a couple of months ago, so I've decided to replace it (Samsung 350 gb) with a new one (Samsing 500 gb/7200 rpm). I have downloaded HD Clone 3.9 (free version) and started to copy.

At the moment it gives the following numbers (and going up and up):
Current sector: 405,616,623
Read errors: 107,192,088
Write errors: 0
Verification errrors: 0.

Could someone please let me know how to interpret these numbers (an all these errors) and whether the new disk will work ok once the copying is finished? (at the moment it's going rather slow, 13mb/s).

Thanks a lot for your help!

It depends on how the disc is connected. If after the 300,000,000 sectors an unrecoverable error occurred, then HDClone simply counts the sectors as erroneous as it goes by them.

It might happen with some USB discs or e-SATA-Discs that go to standby mode when doing the cloning.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your rapid reply! I've put my new HD (SATA) in an external casing and it's connceted through USB.

And does your answer mean that these errors won't interfere when using the new HD as my c-drive?

Thanks, Joanne

I assume so.

Although it is strange that the disc has Read Errors... Since you probably read from the internal disc and want to clone to the external disc...

Although it probably has the same reason: somehow the source drive goes to standby or suspend and therefore doesn't send anymore any data...

Hi,

Any case anyone reads this post / thread and wondered what happened...
In the end I had over 400000 read errors, and the notification that this copy could not be used.

I have then used the windows 'chkdsk' to clean up potential errors. I started the cloning / copying process again,0 read errors, and at the moment I am using my new HD without any problems!

Rgds, Joanne
