HDClone Not Seeing Image

Post by Chris » Wed May 19, 2010 11:02 pm

I cloned a machine into an image and put the image out on a network resource. On the new destination machine, I booted Windows PE (Vista x86) over PXE with appropriate drivers for networking and HDClone.

HDClone REFUSES to see the image that I've created, regardless of where I copy it. I created a special FAT32 partition on the primary disk array for it, tried it with NTFS, tried the network share, and no matter what drive I tell HDClone it's on, it insists that no images were found. I can navigate to each location of the image with full read/write access so it's not a networking/permission problem.

How do I force HDClone to use an image of my own choosing? It seems the file navigation in Version 3.8 Professional (which we purchased) is broken and it's been a frustrating two days of fighting it to get it to see an image I am able to access by every other means outside of HDClone.

System is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 III with a Dell PERC5/i controller and two 160GB drives in RAID1. I can see the array fine from Windows PE and even HDClone sees it. I really need this to work so if there's a patch, updated version, or something I have to download to make it work, let me know.

In order for HDClone to see the image, you have to copy it in the folder "\HDClone Images", that has to lie in the top folder of the drive, e.g. C:\HDClone Images, D:\HDClone Images, M:\HDClone Images etc.

In other locations HDClone will not search for the image.

using Windows XP SP3 and HDClone 3.9

Same kind of problem :
I have formated my USB key to be bootable, then trying to 'install' HDClone on the USB key using HDClone itself :

I have copied the two files originaly placed in
C:\Program Files\HDClone 3.9 Free Edition\bootimages
to the specific folder you speak about (not specified in the big help pdf file)
C:\HDClone Images
respecting case, but no image file is found in HDClone when I try to use "Image to drive"

C, D and E drives are Raid 1 drives.
So, I have test also to a no-Raid drive, P, and no more image file detection.

Any idea ?

I'm a bit confused as for your explanation: To have a bootable USB key, you should start the application 'Create Rescue Medium' from the start menu (or the hdclone.exe in the C:\Program Files\HDClone 3.9 Free Edition folder. There you can select the USB drive to install HDClone onto.

Please elaborate on the further meaning of the posting, I'm not completely understanding what you're trying to do.

Hi Alex

So sorry, I was mistaken.
I thought that after USB Key bootable setting, we have to install HDClone on the USB key, but no, it is installed as autostart program.

In fact, I downloaded and installed HDClone on monday and the USB key didn't boot correctly on the machine I would like to backup.
I've just re-installed HDClone (*) and reformat the USB key that boot now correctly and autostart HDClone on the machine.
(*) First installation had create this install folder :
C:\Program Files\HDClone 3.9 Free Edition
and after this re-install, the new folder is
C:\Program Files\HDClone 3.9.3 Free Edition

Something change ?
In the morning, when I checked the HDClone version, it show 3.9.3 ... like now.
I don't understand this folder name changes.

Thank you for have been so reactive on user problems.

This is the automatic installer. It doesn't overwrite by default, but if it finds a folder with its major version (being 3.9), it simply suggests a folder with its detailed version number (3.9.3), before asking to overwrite it.

We are still working out the best behavior for the installer, which folders and program group entries should be created, as apparently you find this not so optimal, so we will consider this in further releases.

HDClone looks for the image on the drive in the folder "\HDClone Images" (and only there). If you have it in another directory, place it in such a folder.

Please check also the permissions on the folder, b/c HDClone should be able to read the file.
