Background: My previous reports on HDCLONE were based on it's inability to recognize my USB HD when running from the boot CD, but it did recognize it when running from Windows.
I have a Dell desktop, XP-Home-SP3, which has 4 USB ports on the back and 2 USB ports on the front. I connected the back USB ports to 1)keyboard, 2)mouse, 3)Scanner and 4)DVD/ROM. I used the front ports to connect my USB HD's so it would be easier to disconnect them when not being used.
While beta testing a new version of HDCLONE I decided to expand my test environment so I bought a new USB HD, the Maxtor Onetouch 4 Mini, 360gb's. This drive uses 2 USB ports for power and data. I formatted it as FAT32 and noticed that the boot CD version of HDCLONE still did not recognize it.
So I disconnected the CD/ROM from the rear USB port and connected my Seagate Freeagent, 1500gb's, formatted NTSF, and walla!! The boot cd version recognized it..I moved the Maxtor Onetouch to the rear USB ports and HDCLONE also recognized it...so both a FAT32 format and a NTFS formatted USB drive worked correctly. HDCLONE would not recognize either drive when connected to the front USB ports!
I completed my beta-tests using the Seagate NTFS drive connected to a rear USB port and submitted my test reports.
I post this message to alert anyone using external USB HD's (especially with a Dell computer) to try different USB ports if you encounter a problem using HDCLONE's boot-cd not recognizing the drive.
I found this out after weeks of thinking HDCLONE was the main problem...
