Cloned HD does not boot

Post by Marco Aurelio L. Assis » Wed Oct 28, 2009 12:02 am

I have a Toshiba M60 laptop w/ HDD 60 GB only one partition.
I cloned my original 60GB HDD to a new Seagate 160GB using the 3.8 Free Edition.
The Windows XP SP3 sees the 160GB drive. the used space end free space are OK but when I boot the machine stops after a few seconds and do nothing. I tried all kind of boot but with no success.

Please help.

Did you use Automatic Resize and Automatic Adjustment on the clone? And did you use HDClone for Windows or the self-booting HDClone?

If you use HDClone for windows, the disk signature is *always* changed, as otherwise, after the cloning process, Windows gets confused if two disks with the same disk signatures are found (typically resulting in a reboot like in the old days). Usually, a changed disk signature is nothing to worry about, as Windows boots fine from it (only Windows Vista and Windows 7 require some adjustment after that, but that's also done by HDClone).

Automatic Resize though changes the disk structures, since now the size of the partitions change, which now can cause some problems with booting, as does the automatic adjustments, which can only guess some parameters for the new system to boot, but one can't always be sure.

Just try a clone with no resize and no adjustment, preferably with the self-booting variant (but it's no big deal if you use the Windows Variant), then you should get a working variant.

If you have more time to spend (and the previous worked), you can try with resize and no adjustment, therefore gaining the 100GB of additional space, instead of having to repartition them.

Alex,

You need to review the options on the HD Clone software. The ability to "clone with no resize and no adjustment" is not readily apparent. The software mixes the words sizing and adjustments in the same dialogue box.

FWIW I took your advice and made a clone with no change in sizing. The same box had a button for no adjustments so I clicked that too. I was able to then boot off the new disk. I used another software program called EASEUS Partition Master to change the partion on the new disk to take advantage of the extra space.

Thanks for your contribution in solving the problem on my Dell 1100.

Thank you. I was having a bit of an adventure, trying to clone a disk for the first time. I had got very stuck, upgrading an HP Compaq. Couldn't boot ... followed your advice. Worked perfectly and with GREAT ease. Thank you
