HDClone(Free) hangs at 57% Dell E1505 MediaDirect

Post by Bob » Thu Apr 29, 2010 5:53 am

My HDClone Free hangs at 57% - running in Windows XP
- Dell E1505 Windows XP 2GB 40GB source drive 83% full defragged
- 500GB target drive (Hitachi Travelstar SATA 7200rpm)
- usb 2.0 powered hub attached to Apricorn external drive unit
- used roadkil.net to wipe sector 3 to address Apricorn's inability to deal with hidden partitions (Dell Media Direct)
- Apricorn resulted in a truncated drive (+400GB in an empty partition). I had a 40GB drive image running on a 500GB drive. Doh!!!
- Diskpart didn't work so I am trying HD Clone to reclone and resize the partitions (automatic sizing).

Please tell if you're using HDClone 3.8.5.

If I correctly understand, your system hangs during the making of the image or during the restoring back of said image?

Does the sector count stay at the same value or does it increase (even though very slowly, around 256 sectors in half a minute)? Do read / write errors appear? Does the animation in the center of the screen still work?

If nothing is happening, please press Ctrl+Alt+F8 and open a console within HDClone, and there enter 'procinfo'. It should read something like this:
[pre]
/emb>procinfo
ID V T Runti Name
65541 0 1 0.07 procinfo.exe
65542 0 7 9.25 shell.exe
65543 0 5 10.92 hdclone.exe
65544 0 1 10.92 svc.sysint.srv
....
[/pre]

It could also read like this:
[pre]
/emb>procinfo
ID V T E Runti Name
65541 0 1 0.07 procinfo.exe
65542 0 7 9.25 shell.exe
65543 0 5 1 10.92 hdclone.exe
65544 0 1 10.92 svc.sysint.srv
....
[/pre]
in which case there's an exception in hdclone.exe

Alex:

Thanks for your quick reply. I'll run this again and give this a try but I've got to get some critical projects done first. I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can.

Here is as much as I remember:

- I was running hdclone 3.8.5.fe.en
- The animation was frozen and hdclone was completely frozen.
- The only way to quit was to end the task manager. It was using 0% of the cpu.
- The led on the external drive was flickering and my pc hard drive seemed to be hanging up (red and yellow bars on the freemeter display for the hard drive.
- I tried to run HDClone twice. It hung up at about the 30 minute mark the second time (I had missed the first freeze up).

Ok, I'll wait for your input then. In the mean time a tip: if HDClone freezes under Windows, you don't have to use the task manager to kill the application, but you can press ctrl+alt+f8 to get a console and enter 'halt' into the console. This also terminates the program.

Alex:

Some additional info:

I could not resize my partition using EASEUS partition.

Would another "purchase" version of HDClone be able to fix my sticky partition? I need to get this fixed ASAP and from what I'm reading online, I do not want to do a Windows XP install from Scratch...

Thanks,

Bob

Alex:

HDClone freezes so ctrl+alt+f8 does not work. There are no errors and the animation freezes. It has locked at 72%, 53%, and 54% today. I have the printscreens that I can email you.

I've cleaned out all autostart programs, turned off the screensaver, unplugged the internet cable, etc. Only Norton 2009 is up but I disable everything on Norton.

I've tried the automatic resizing. I'll give the HDCLone proportional resize a shot and see what happens.

Any suggestions for trying to extend the partition size on the target drive after a successful clone with a too small C: partition (ala Apricorn)? I attempted to use EASEUS Partiion magic but no dice.

thanks
Bob

Alex:

My problem is fixed. Whatever Apricorn did to mess up my hard drive made HDclone not work in any mode. Fortunately, I was able to just reclone it with Apricorn and use the brand new release (yesterday) of EASEUS Partition Master 5.8.1. Home Free Edition to resize the truncated "c:" partition. It's pretty nifty actually as you can do the resizing by point & click and adjust the graphical images of your partitions right on the screen.

I'll remember NOT to use the APRICORN software and just use HDClone going forward.

Cheers,
Bob

I'm relieved to hear that it works now on your system.

I've got a similar problem:
I'm trying to migrate to the new larger HD because I'm out of room and have several new programs to install.

HDCLONE 3.9 Free
Dell Latitude CPt
XP Pro
C:\ 5gig
D:\ 80gig (on USB IDE adapter)
copy reaches 69% and the program stops and locks up
CTRL ALT F8 won't work - the program is frozen
There are no exceptions noted, but at the capture it was running fine.
I do have a screen capture from BEFORE the lockup.

If you have a screenshot of it I gather you're running the windows version of it... We are still looking into the matter, as part of this problem is outside of the domain of our control (I think it has something to do with power management and such sorts of things, but we'll have to investigate further).
