HDClone 3.7 does not get past 0%

Post by trostemd » Sun Aug 02, 2009 4:36 am

I have two 40gb hard drives. They are identical. My C Drive on the computer was beginning to fail. After many 'chkdsks' and attempted repairs, my computer now boots up to the message, "Hard Drive failure imminent!"

I tried using Zenworks Imaging CD to create an image of my C Drive and saving it onto an external drive. I then tried to place in the other 40gb hard drive (that is good) and image it. However, at a certain file in the image Zenworks would fail due to a "Segmentation Fault."

I had used HDClone before and came back to use it in this case. I've got HDClone 3.7. I place my bad hard drive as the master and the good one as a slave. I boot to the CD and attempt to copy the drive over. The percentage never moves from "0%". I get read and write errors. The data transfer rate also drops down to 3KB/s. I let it run overnight thinking it just had to make it through the bad sectors and everything would be okay, but the next morning it was still at "0%".

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you try to copy with both drives attached to the IDE cable? You could also try to connect to an external drive. Then at least write errors should not occur.

Especially if both drives are connected to the same controller (as Master and Slave), an error which manifests itself on the controller can then lead to errors on both drives connected.

Did you use the current version 3.7.5?

Yea both drives are connected as Master and Slave on the same IDE Cable. So you are saying to copy my Master drive to an external drive and the in turn copy the external drive over to the new internal drive?

And yes, I used verson 3.7.5.

Instead of copying twice, you can simply put the new internal drive in the external case (if you can open it), so you only have to do one copy. If your external drive cannot be opened (or has a different interface than Parallel-ATA), you might have to do the copy twice, first from the old internal to the external, and then from the external to the new internal disk.

I tried copying it to the external hard drive and it did not work. The same problem. I guess my original hard drive is in such bad shape that I can't copy anything over.

Hm, could you try setting the drive speed in the BIOS to something other than UDMA? Usually, there's UDMA (in its different incarnations) and also PIO, the latter might work slower, but could work in your case.

This option should be set in the BIOS of your computer (it is not a HDClone Option). You can enter the BIOS by pressing F1, Del or some other key indicated at during the startup of your computer. Once in the BIOS, there's a section (called Basic Setup or something similar) where all the Hard Discs are listed. Select the Hard Disk in question and there you should be able to change the access from UDMA to PIO.
