v3.7, Vista and NTFS formatted USB drive

Post by wm4bama » Sat Mar 28, 2009 2:11 pm

I just bought a Laptop with Vista Home installed. I ran v3.7 with my USB HD (formatted in NTSF) connected, and made the boot CD.

After booting up the HDCLONE CD I tried a Disk-->Image and HDCLONE scanned for devices and found all the right drives. When I told it to begin it refused to write to the external USB drive unless I allowed it to reformat it to FAT32,

Also tried a Partition-->Image and had the same results.

Why does HDCLONE refuse to write an image file to an externl NTFS formatted drive?

Seems another improvement to v3.8 is needed.

We are aware of the lack of NTFS write support for the bootable version, but this work is well on its way and will be released in one of the next minor versions. The problem with NTFS is that it is way more riskier to create files on a file system than on a FAT file system, and therefore the possibility that the data previously on the destination drive could get damaged. We try to avoid this with extensive tests in order to bring you a version that works fast and reliably.

Thanks Alex,

Is there an estimated release date for the next version (v3.8) ? Support for NTFS formatted HD's should be "standard" by now, IMHO....

The support for NTFS reading is in a stage you could describe as 'stable' and working, and will find its way into HDClone in one of the next subreleases (within this quarter). Support for NTFS writing is working, but cannot yet be described as stable, but should follow soon after the release of the read support.

Thanks Alex, I hope the next release supports both reading and writing NTFS formatted HD's else it seems really useless to support read without write capability.

As you know from previous posts v3.7 works great on my XP system with NTFS files but only when run from a BartPE boot CD.

Unfortunately, as of today, BartPE does not support the Vista operating system so I can't use that method on my new Vista Laptop.
