Data expands to more than it originally was

Post by Matthew Holbert » Thu Jan 14, 2010 6:15 pm

I used EaseUs Partition Master to shrink an 80GB drive to about 10.4GB (the size of the data plus about 500mb) then resized it back to the full 80GB (the data is still shrunk). Afterwhich I used HDClone to copy the 80GB drive to a 10.4GB partition. I got a 250GB drive and copied from the partition to it. I then installed it in a PC and it started up Windows XP (32bit) perfectly fine. I then went to my computer and right clicked over the drive to find out how much space was used. It showed up as using 128GB for 10.4GB of data. How can I resize it to the proper size.

It is not entirely clear what this case means.

You have a 80GB drive with 10.4 GB data, shrunk with EaseUs to a partition of 80GB, but with only the first 10.4 GB full of data (if my understanding is correct).

Now you copied this 80GB partition to another partition, which is 10.4 GB in size.

Then you copied this 10.4 GB partition to the 250GB disk. and on this 250GB disk you see the 10.4 GB partition taking up 128GB.

The question is: how is the 250GB partition partitioned: only this one 128GB partition or more partitions on it? Did the system boot from the copied 10.4GB partition or from the previous system installed on the 250GB partition?
