HDClone hangs up

Post by Sven Burkert » Tue Apr 22, 2008 8:18 pm

Hello,

when I reboot my system and start HDClone, the program only works for several seconds: I can hide the help and focus some elements via the tab key (the mouse doesn't work) but after 2 or 3 seconds even strg-alt-del doesn't work.
I tried it several times and I tried it with 3,5' and with usb.

Can someone tell me what's wrong?

First of all, Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work in HDClone. Never.
On the other hand, it depends on whether you use USB mouse/keyboard or both attached via PS/2, it also depends on the settings in your BIOS and lastly, it might have to do with some of the drivers (namely IDE and USB).

I'll try to clear things up a bit:
If you use an USB mouse (or keyboard), in the best case our USB driver should take over and let you use it. Without our USB driver taking over, the BIOS might offer a method do emulate a PS/2 mouse to the system. If the USB driver takes over, this emulation is turned off, and normal USB operation should continue.
Our USB driver is started approx. 3-5 seconds after HDClone starts, so if the mouse isn't operating anymore at this point, it could be that the BIOS does turn off the emulation, but does not release the mouse to the USB driver. In this case it might help deactivating the USB mouse emulation in the BIOS (something labelled "Legacy Mouse Support" or in the like).

The same is also valid for the keyboard.

If after 2-3 seconds even the keyboard doesn't work anymore (pressing tab to change focus should give you some visual feedback), then it is probably another driver started at this point, mostly the IDE driver, which in certain situations can cause a hang of the system by Interrupt Overload, i.e. the IDE controller generates always new interrupts, not allowing the mouse or keyboard interrupts to be served - thus appearing blocked.

A fix for this last problem will be available shortly, and we're also working on solving the issue for the erroneous handling of many BIOSes of the USB mouse/keyboard thing.

Hello.
I have the same problem and can't use HDClone basic edition at all. My USB wireless keyboard/mouse doesn't work. I tried old PS/2 mouse and it is working a few seconds and then hangs up. I tried the recommendations in this topic without success. I have Dell 8400 with BIOS A09.
Thak you
