For testing µnOS 0.98 you just need a floppy disk. No partitioning, no installation on your harddisk! Thus there is no risk to interfere with the operating systems already installed.

Simply download the software package and create a µnOS 0.98 demodisk. From this floppy disk you can start µnOS on any PC.

New in µnOS 0.98

As usual, the new Version 0.98 of µnOS has been rigorously improved and new abilities have been integrated. Thereby the stability of the kernel has been more tightened. At the same time the reactivity has been vastly increased. µnOS runs further on processors starting from 486 (and accordingly fast on more powerful processors...) starting from 8 MB RAM.

The most conspicious innovation is the window server, that now supports free resizing as well as maximizing and minimizing of windows. Accordingly, there is now also a window manager application to control open windows centrically. Compared to the predecessor, graphic throughput has again been tremendously accelerated and can be said to be more than fast for a pure software-based graphic engine.

The third big innovation is the console interface that enables fast and easy implementation of text-based applications with unparalleled simplicity. Each application can open one or more (virtual) textmode windows that are accessed as a matrix or via positioning and print commands. This enables easier implementation of sequential driven programs than in most GUI environments. Furthermore, the console interface offers besides keyboard input also character oriented mouse support. A first impression can be catched from the new programs "Snake", "Game of Life", "Hangman".

The also new task manager, that serves the control of running processes - which can even be terminated via a "kill" command - is also implemented under the console interface.
